I will be the first to admit the first two Sharps Bros lowers, the “Hellbreaker” and “Warthog”, were not really my style at all. Recently they’ve started posting pics of their newest lower, “The Jack”, which in my opinion is 100 times better than the other two. As with the previous two models, it uses the mag well to display most of the uniqueness of the lower which in this case is the face of a skull. 

When I first saw it I wasn’t sure how I felt about it but you have to admit the design is pretty cool and its kind of growing on me. I remember the first time I saw the Seekins Precision lower and hated it, now its one of my favorites I own. Rainier Arms is offering installation of lower parts kits for the entire month of June. This includes your standard LPK’s, Buffer Tube Kits, Stocks, etc. I spoke with the Big Boss at Rainier Arms about the program and he said that customers don’t even have to buy the parts from Rainier Arms. If you have a lower and parts laying around that you would like to have installed together, ship them to Rainier Arms and they will install it for you. You just have to pay for the return shipping. There is usually a $25 fee for this but right now its free. You could also purchase a new Lower, LPK and Stock Kit from RA and have them install it prior to shipping as well. Just FYI, there is an additional charge for tuning an adjustable trigger.

Man, I really need to go on vacation more often! Not for the obvious reasons but because all the good stuff happens when I’m out of town. We were given the chance recently to take a look at a couple of lowers from AREA 53. AREA 53 is a company that I’ve heard of and seen pictures of their products but really wasn’t that familiar with. They primarily focus on billet uppers and lowers including many different models and customization options for their billet lowers. Below I’ve included some pictures of the AREA 53 billet lowers I have that will eventually get built up into complete lowers.

PACKAGING

The packaging for the AREA 53 lowers is very cool. The boxes have the AREA 53 logo on the outside and cutouts for the lowers on the inside. The cutout hugs the lowers very tight to keep them from getting damaged in shipping. The two lowers I have are the AR-15 “El Jefe” and AR-10 “El Capitan – Challenge Coin”. 

AR-15

The AR-15 model has a large AREA 53 logo on the right side mag well as well as an ambi bolt release. The finish is very clean and consistent with no sharp edges. It also features different selector markings where instead of machining in the markings they recessed the area around them so the “Auto – Fire – Safe” are raised. 

AR-10

The AR-10 model is very similar to the AR-15 model with exception of the larger mag well. The AR-10 model we received is also a different model that gives you a place to install a challenge coin on the right side of the mag well. These can be pretty cool if you have a neat Challenge Coin to put in them. They offer the Challenge Coin model in both AR-15 and AR-10 models. The AR-10 model also features an ambi bolt release as well. The finish on the AR-10 model is equally as nice and the anodizing is nice and consistent.

SPECIAL FEATURES

As mentioned before, both the AR-15 and AR-10 billet lowers from AREA 53 feature an ambi bolt release. The ambi bolt releases come pre-installed and function very smooth. 

Both lowers also feature a threaded bolt catch pin. The bolt catch pin is notoriously the most annoying roll pin to install on an AR so any time its replaced with a threaded bolt catch pin is a great thing. Another feature not shown is the upper tensioning screw that is present on both models.

The front of the AREA 53 mag wells have been contoured to give you the ability to use it as a grip for your support hand. It also gives the lowers a nice look as well. 

Our initial impressions parallel all of the very positive things we’ve heard from others who have used the AREA 53 billet receivers for their builds. AREA 53 appears to take great care in making sure their lowers look and feel great. A couple of things I would love to see AREA 53 offer are 45 degree selector compatibility and possibly and ambi mag release but the lowers are very capable as is. Pretty soon we’ll get these lowers built up and make sure they function as well as they look which I’m quite sure they will. I first wrote about James Madison Tactical nearly two years ago when I was able to help introduce their new 80% AR-15 lower receiver. Since then I have had countless friends build AR-15 rifles off of JMT 80% polymer lowers with great success and zero issues. Once people started to see how easy it was to machine the JMT lower they started pretty much demanding that JMT offer a .308 (AR-10) lower. James Madison Tactical listened to their customer base and decided to move forward with developing a .308 lower. A few days ago I received a package from James Madison Tactical. On the outside it had their logo with the title “308 Equalizer”. 

All James Madison Tactical lowers come with their own machining jig so of course inside the box I found…you guessed, a machining jig. The JMT machining jig has a 3-piece construction and is made of a rigid plastic that could probably be used more than once but all JMT lowers come with a new jig so you’ll probably never have to use it again. 

What I was more interested in seeing was the lower itself. I have handled a few JMT AR-15 80% lowers before and they are nice so I was curious to see if the fit and finish on the .308 receiver was as nice. Maybe its just me but I think the finish on the .308 is the best they’ve produced yet which is pretty impressive. The webbing on the mag well looks great and the flare on the mag well is not just a sharp line but is actually curved out.

A couple of feature that I was happy to see carried over from the AR-15 lower are the aggressive texture on the front of the mag well which can be used as a support hand grip and they also used the threaded brass insert for the pistol grip screw so you can really tighten the grip screw down without stripping the threads. They also reinforced key areas of the lower so you don’t have to worry about them breaking like other less desirable poly lowers do.

Basically, as you can see, the 80% lower just needs to have the Fire Control Pocket machined as well as drill holes for the Safety Selector, Trigger Pin and Hammer Pin. That is where the supplied jig comes in handy. It has all of the holes in specific places to make sure you don’t screw it up. JMT has great machining instructions showing exactly how to machine their 80% lowers which is a great tool. It also shows you all of the tools you’ll need as well.

Over the next few weeks I plan on machining this James Madison Tactical .308 80% lower receiver, assembling it and getting it out to the range. I already have a few nicely running .308 uppers that I built so I will be able to quickly see how well the JMT .308 80% lower does with them and report back to you guys with more info after some range time.

Over the years I have built a bunch of ARs. Some are not that special to me but others I have really grown to love and will be ones I will hand down to my kids as they grow up. Most of my rifles are pretty “Frankenstein’ish” So I wanted to start sharing a little bit about those special ARs. Nothing too in-depth. Just easy reading with some parts listed and a nice photo. 

One such rifle is one of the first ones I would probably think of when it comes to grabbing a rifle in a SHTF situation. My PWS / Seekins Precision hybrid which I’ve had for about 4 years now has morphed into a rifle I could never see myself getting rid of.

THE LOWER
The Seekins Precision SP223 billet lower receiver was the first part of this build that I owned. At first I wasn’t sure about the looks of the SP223 but it quickly grew on me and I had to have one. With the addition of a Wilson Combat TTU-3G trigger, Battle Arms BAD-CASS-SA-ST (Combat Ambi Safety Selector – Semi Auto – Short Throw) ambi safety, a Magpul MOE+ grip, Fortis QD End Plate and B5 Systems SOPMOD Bravo stock this lower feels complete.

THE UPPER
The upper I can not take as much credit for its awesomeness as I did not build it. It is a Primary Weapons Systems MK114 complete upper. The MK114 consists of a 14.5″ .223 Wylde QPQ barrel, pinned FSC556 comp, PWS Long-Stroke Piston System, PWS 13″ KeyMod rail, PWS Forged Upper and a BCM Gunfighter Charging Handle. 

I added to this upper a set of Magpul MBUS GenII backup sights, an Aimpoint PRO, RailScales KeyMod covers, a Zero Bravo Inc KeyMod RHS (Reversible Hand Stop) and a SureFire X300U with SR07 tape switch.

Why is this one of my favorites? Not only is it a pretty sexy looking rifle but it is an extremely reliable and solid rifle. I’ve put it up against some of my 18″ SPR type rifles and with exception of my .5″ group tack driver it shoots as good if not better than the rest. Its not a cheap setup by any means but it is definitely one I would grab in a heart beat and not have any reservation as to whether or not it could get the job done when called upon. 

Our good friends over at Fathom Arms are pretty well known for their Standard and Enhanced Nitride BCGs. Recently they have also launched their new website and with that new website came a whole bunch of new products from other manufacturers that they are now carrying for sale. I really like that they are doing is these overview videos on the products they are carrying. These videos are not reviews but just video overviews to show you the details and features of the products. Its one thing to see a photo or two of a product but to have a nice video overview of a product prior to buying it is a nice touch.
