The other day I ran across these new lowers from Vorn USA. They are a forged lower receiver called the Lima 1 which features some sweet milling on the surface for weight reduction which looks really cool. I like that they did not machine all the way through which will help them maintain their strength and also keep dirt and dust out of the internals.

I couldn’t find a weight anywhere but as you can see in the photos below, they remove a decent amount of material. Not like an ounce or two is gonna break anyone’s back but ounces can add up. The lowers look pretty stinking sexy and for just $99 with your choice of Black Anodized or a number of different cerakote colors its not a bad deal either. They are also available in raw aluminum for those who want to do their own custom finish.

F-1 Firearms makes some pretty sweet looking AR-15 receivers and rails and lately everyone has been asking for them to make a .308 billet set as well. However, today they released a photo of their SHOT Show display and wouldn’t you know, right at the bottom were two awesome looking F-1 Firearms .308 billet sets.

As you can see they will be offering a skeletonized .308 version similar to their AR-15 receivers. Big thanks to Next Level Armament who shot me a sneak peek at their new ELITE AR-15 receiver set yesterday. The ELITE receiver set is a forged receiver set that has had material removed wherever possible without reducing the strength of the receiver. As you can see in the photos below they did not “skeletonize” the lower but just removed excess material creating recessed areas around important features of the lower. This won’t result in a massive amount of weight savings but there will be some and looks pretty awesome too. Although you can’t see it in this photos, the upper receiver has also received the same treatment as they have machined out the center of the 12 o’clock rail section and added their logo on the top at the charging handle opening.

While a receiver set like this from some other companies would break the bank, Next Level Armament will be offering these as matched sets for just $225. I was told they will have a few hundred back from anodizing and ready to ship by Wednesday (2-17-16) of next week. Seems like Retro ARs or Clones are all the rage lately. As someone who has never done any Retro/Clone builds but have always wanted to, these definitely interest me and I am excited to see what else Brownells plans on bringing to the market. There’s just something awesome about seeing the history of the AR-15/M16 and its many variations. Good on Brownells for helping us have the ability to create our own clones of those awesome rifles.

Overall this seems to be a very well thought out machining jig. The fact that it works for both AR-15 and AR-10 80% lowers is pretty awesome. Being that it works with both AR-15 and AR-10 lowers I was expecting to see a huge price tag on it but was very happy to see it is priced right in line or less than many of the comparable machining jigs on the market that only work with one or the other. If you’re an 80% DIY’er you definitely need to at least give the new Juggernaut Tactical Ultimate Jig a look.

If you’ve been watching any news coverage regarding gun control legislation the favorite term used is “Assault Weapon” or “Assault Rifle”, and both terms have nothing to do with the AR-15. About 2 weeks ago I ordered some Cerro Forge 80 Percent lower receivers from a company called Right To Bear Arms and Supply. With the uncertainty of future gun legislation, 80% lowers are a great item to have on hand but are super hard to find in-stock. The 80% lowers not only shipped the next day but they showed up at my house just a few days later. I had never purchased anything from them before but after an outstanding experience I am putting them on my “Will do business with again” list. I just happened to run across these new “Billet 4o” receiver sets by ATX Armory yesterday and man they are pretty sweet looking. Apparently the name “Billet 40” comes from all of the 4o degree angles on the receivers. There literally isn’t a square inch area that doesn’t have some neat detail work done to it. Even the underside of the trigger guard looks sick. Most of the machining appears to be in an effort to lower the weight of the receivers which combined come in at just under 1 pound.
